Pet Portrait Canvas Size Guide
July 9, 2026 · 4 min read
Almost nobody regrets going one size larger. A canvas that looked generous on screen can disappear on a living-room wall, so it helps to think in terms of the wall rather than the number.
Size by room
- 8" × 10" — desks, shelves, gallery-wall clusters and small keepsake displays
- 12" × 16" — hallways, above a console table, or beside other framed prints
- 16" × 20" — bedrooms and nurseries; the most popular single-pet size
- 24" × 30" — living rooms and above a sofa or fireplace as a feature piece
The two-thirds rule
Aim for artwork that spans roughly two-thirds the width of the furniture below it. Over a 60-inch sofa that means about 40 inches of art — one large canvas, or a pair hung with a two-inch gap.
Hanging height
Hang so the centre of the canvas sits about 57 to 60 inches from the floor — gallery eye level. Above furniture, leave six to ten inches of breathing space between the top of the sofa back and the bottom of the frame.
Multiple pets
Two pets in one composition need at least 16" × 20" so both faces stay clear; three or more read best at 24" × 30". The alternative is a set of matching smaller canvases, one per pet, hung as a group.
What your photo needs to support
We prepare every file at 300 DPI, so larger sizes need more original detail. A modern phone photo taken close to your pet in good light prints happily at 24" × 30". A small, cropped or heavily zoomed image may be better suited to 12" × 16", and we will tell you honestly at the preview stage.
Measure the wall, apply the two-thirds rule, and if you are between two sizes choose the larger one.
