How Does a Custom Pet Portrait Work, Step by Step?
August 8, 2026 · 6 min read
A custom pet portrait is not printed the moment you pay. The process has a human step in the middle: you upload a photo, an artist hand-finishes the artwork, and you approve the result by email before anything is produced. Understanding that order of events explains most of the questions people ask — why the preview looks simple, why proofs take a day or two, and why revisions are free before printing but not after.
Step 1 — Choose the product and upload a photo
You pick the item first (canvas, framed print, blanket, pillow, mug or keepsake), then the size and art style, then upload one clear photo of your pet. Only one good photo is needed. Backgrounds do not matter because they are removed.
Upload the original file rather than a screenshot or a social-media re-download; those are compressed and lose the fur detail we need for a large print.
Step 2 — Understand what the preview shows
The customizer preview shows photo placement, crop, product and size only. It is a layout tool, not the finished art. The final artwork is created by our artists after the order and sent to you by email for approval before printing.
This is deliberate: an instant machine mock-up would be less accurate than the hand-finished piece you actually receive.
Step 3 — Checkout
Payment is taken by card at checkout, which starts the artwork. Prices are per product and size — keepsakes from $24, canvases $59 to $149, framed memorial pieces $89 to $129, pillows $49 to $59 and photo blankets $89 to $119. US orders over $75 ship free.
Step 4 — Artist work and your digital proof
An artist cuts your pet out of the background, rebuilds edge detail such as whiskers and ear fluff, applies the chosen style, and composes the piece to the exact print dimensions. Names, dates and inscriptions are set at this stage.
You then receive the proof by email, usually within 24–48 hours (3–5 business days at peak periods such as December).
Step 5 — Approve or request changes
- Approve, and the file goes to production the same day.
- Or reply with changes: colours, background, crop, collar, expression, inscription wording.
- Revisions before printing are free and unlimited.
- If we cannot get it right, you get a full refund and nothing is printed.
Step 6 — Printing and production
Approved files are prepared at 300 DPI and produced on demand by print partners in the US and Europe. Canvases are stretched and finished in 2–3 business days; blankets, pillows and mugs take 5–7 business days.
Because every item is made to order, the approved file is locked once production starts — that is why later changes need a new order.
Step 7 — Shipping and tracking
You get a tracking link when the piece ships. Typical delivery is 3–6 business days in the US and 5–12 business days internationally. If an item arrives damaged or misprinted, we reprint or refund it.
Common questions this process answers
- "Why doesn't the preview look like a painting?" — it shows placement only.
- "Can I change the background?" — yes, at the proof stage, free.
- "Will I see it before it's printed?" — always.
- "How fast can it arrive?" — tell us the deadline and we prioritise the proof.
Next steps
Ready to start? Upload a photo in the customizer and browse the collection to compare sizes. If you run a pet business and your clients keep asking how portraits work, you can refer them through our partner program instead of managing artwork yourself.
Upload, pay, receive a hand-finished proof by email, approve or revise for free, then we print at 300 DPI and ship. The only irreversible step is the one you take yourself: approval.
