Choosing an Art Style for Your Custom Pet Portrait
July 2, 2026 · 5 min read
Style is the decision customers agonise over most, and it is really two questions: what suits your pet's character, and what suits the wall it will hang on. Here is how our artists think about each option.
Royal portrait — for the pet with opinions
Renaissance costume, deep shadow and rich fabric. It works best with confident, expressive faces and reads as deliberately witty rather than sentimental. Strong in hallways, home offices and any room with dark or saturated walls.
Watercolour — for soft light and soft rooms
Loose washes, warm gradients and edges that fade into the paper. It flatters fluffy coats and long fur, and sits comfortably in bedrooms, nurseries and cream or linen interiors.
Minimal line art — for modern interiors
One continuous contour, no colour noise. It is the most forgiving style if your photo is imperfect, and the easiest to hang in a gallery wall next to prints and typography. Choose it for graphic, high-contrast spaces.
Memorial — for remembrance
Quiet colour, soft light and space for a name, dates or a short phrase. Nothing decorative competes with the face. This is the style to choose when the portrait is meant to be a place to remember rather than a talking point.
Matching the piece to the product
- Canvas: every style works; best for detailed royal and memorial pieces
- Blanket and pillow: watercolour and line art hold up best on fabric
- Mug and keepsakes: line art stays readable at small sizes
Still unsure?
Pick the style you are drawn to and say so in your order notes. You will receive a free digital preview and can request minor adjustments before anything is printed, so the decision is never final at checkout.
Match the style to your pet's character first and your interior second — and remember the free preview means you can adjust before printing.
